| Ruth & Joe Hopkins - Owners Pasadena Journal: Citizen Award |
Ruthie and Joe Hopkins publish The Pasadena Journal and the San Gabriel Valley Journal News. As a team, they have co-published The Journal since 1989, serving eight cities in the greater San Gabriel Valley area, with over 30,000 ethnically diverse readers each week. The Journal is a "Good News Newspaper" which seeks to tell the good things in the African community, yet while highlighting solutions to problems, without dwelling on the problems. Their goal is to highlight those people and events that make people love living and working where they live, with a sense of hope for the future. The Journal seeks to be a balanced voice for the community and does a good job... setting out the good in the community and providing a voice for people who, in the past, have had no voice, and making a positive difference. For that reason, their readers keep up and stay abreast of the good news in our community. The Journal is devoted to supporting African-American communities, businesses, churches and organizations and has tackled issues of concern to the community and attempted to be another voice on subjects such as hiring practices, lack of diversity and racism in city government and city departments, police enforcement, the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce, the Pasadena Rose Bowl, the Pasadena Unified School District, and the Pasadena Playhouse. The Journal News provides affordable advertising and marketing services for businesses, churches, organizations and the community. Including The Journal, the Hopkins entrepreneural ventures and holdings include: Grammys Place Gift and Coffee Shop, the Pasadena Black Expo and Marketplaces, THE PASSPORT Black Business Directory, Jesus Is the Reason for the Season Gospel Jazz Concert, and the Professional Careers Institute , a school for Paralegal and Journalism training. The Hopkins operate their businesses from Hopkins Village located at 1541B North Lake Avenue in Pasadena, California, also where they host meetings, birthday parties, teas, book signings, and receptions.
